Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Museum

Museum | Montrose | Scotland | United Kingdom

The Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Museum in Johnshaven, Scotland, is a volunteer-run museum dedicated to preserving and presenting the rich history and cultural heritage of the two coastal villages of Benholm and Johnshaven. It is located in the former lifeboat house of Johnshaven, built in 1891, which played a central role in the maritime history of the region.

Key features of the exhibition:

Maritime History: The museum explores the close connection of Johnshaven with fishing and the sea. The history of local lifeboats, the coastguard, and the Rocket Life-Saving Brigade, founded in the 19th century to rescue shipwrecked individuals, is highlighted. A digital exhibition allows visitors to experience the stories of Johnner Jack and other local personalities.

Community Life Conditions: The museum provides insights into the harsh life of the village communities since the 17th century. It discusses the challenges of living in a remote coastal village, the impacts of railway construction, and the development of the fishing industry.

Interactive Exhibitions: Visitors can participate in interactive activities, including a children's area with age-appropriate information, activities, and a treasure hunt that make learning about local history fun and engaging.

Events and Activities: The museum regularly organizes events such as photo contests, Easter egg hunts, and historical film screenings to spark interest in local history and involve the community.

The Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Museum is a vibrant place that preserves the region's history and makes it accessible to future generations. It provides a valuable resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in the history of Scottish coastal villages.

Great little local museum, run by volunteers. Well worth a visit. We also went on a heritage walk guided by two volunteers and it was really interesting.
